Hello! I'm Devin Kellis, a medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia and recent Editorial Fellow with the AMA Journal of Ethics focusing on the ethics of human extinction from a medical perspective. Most of my past research has focused on neuroscience and behavioral science. My undergraduate honors and masters theses, for example, focused on empathy and fear, respectively.
Studying in a physician-scientist training program led to my current work which makes the case for a new specialty called "extinction medicine." The specialty's mission is to manage risks related to human extinction while minimizing social harm. I'm writing a textbook on the topic in lieu of my doctoral dissertation (more on that later). I also organize the Extinction Medicine Reading Group, an International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) Medical Student Movement Initiative, and co-organize the Ethics of Human Extinction Reading Group with Dr. Émile P. Torres.
I am eager to learn from and engage with others, so please do reach out if you would like to collaborate, provide criticism, share ideas, ask questions, or anything else! I am on Twitter and BlueSky (@devinkellis), at least for now. My Google Scholar is here.
